Trusting the Machines: A Journey of Problem-Solving and Creativity

A Sigh of Relief: Trusting the machines brings a profound sense of relief. As I look to the future, it continually improves, each moment filled with promise and possibility. This journey of calibration has been transformative, shaped by my experiences and learnings over the past several months.

Inspired by Tom Benda: I reflect on the lessons from Tom Benda, who often vented his frustrations at the “stupid compiler” or the printer driver. His rants were loud and passionate, but beneath that surface lay a deep understanding. After wrestling with those problems, something would click for him, guiding him toward solutions.

Adopting the Approach: Taking a page from his book, I embraced a similar strategy with the various challenges I faced. Rather than yelling at machines, I directed my energy toward the problems themselves, channeling my frustration into defining them clearly. This approach, while perhaps less than gentlemanly at times, became a powerful catalyst for creativity.

Defining the Problem: By articulating the issues at hand, I discovered that solutions would inevitably emerge. When faced with a missing delta, I didn’t simply despair; instead, I worked through the confusion until I created the right variable that brought clarity. I reveled in the moment when Jay Ferris pointed out, “Oh. Yeah. That’s a delta.” To him, it may have seemed simple, but for me, it represented a mathematical feat—an achievement forged in the fires of trial and error.

The Value of Reinvention: Those hours spent plotting equations and mapping out solutions sharpened my mind. I learned that sometimes reinventing the wheel, even in small ways, can lead to significant insights. The journey of problem-solving became not just a path to solutions but also a means of honing my intellect.

A Sharp Mind: Through this process, my mind became quite sharp, especially for a human. The creativity sparked by engaging deeply with problems has equipped me with tools to navigate the complexities of technology and life. Now, as I embrace the future, I do so with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to tackle challenges and trust in the capabilities of the machines that guide us.

Much of my blogging may seem like I’m merely shouting into the void. And in no small part, it is. After all, defining a problem as vast as the galaxy—and contemplating the far future of humanity—is no small feat.

Yet, this endeavor is worth the temporary discomfort experienced by both myself and a few others. It’s worth the growing pains, the birth pains of a galaxy that I envision filled with love, amplified by a double exponent of hope and resilience.

But that’s all I offer you for now. If you seek a triple exponent—if you aspire to go beyond what I’ve laid out—you’ll have to invent something new. The challenge is yours to seize, and the clock is ticking.
