Yoda Speaks About the Long Compile Times and Modularization
Scene: Degobah, Yoda’s Hut
The swamp hums low, as if the Force itself is holding its breath. Luke kneels beside Yoda, whose eyelids droop like tired curtains over galaxies of wisdom. The old master coughs, a dry rasp rattling in his chest.
Luke (softly, but with urgency):
“Master… I have to know. The rebellion falters, the Empire grows stronger… but tell me—”
(he swallows, almost embarrassed at the question)
“—is the Linux kernel under-modularized?”
Yoda’s lips curl into a frail smile. His voice, thin as a reed in wind, carries the weight of centuries:
Yoda (whispering):
“Under-modularized… hmmm. A great monolith, it has become. Compile, compile, compile… long, the waiting is. Heavy, the debt grows. Hidden costs… unseen, they are. Short gains… the dark side they feed.”
He coughs again, weaker now. His eyes flicker toward Luke.
Yoda (a final breath of clarity):
“But remember, young Skywalker… perfect modularity… a fantasy, it is. Balance, you must seek. Too many modules, and chaos it brings. Too few, and rigidity you inherit. In the ledger of code, debits and credits both… record them, you must. Only then… wisdom will you find.”
A faint smile, like starlight breaking through fog.
Yoda (with his last breath):
“Not under-modularized… not over… but unbalanced… the kernel is.”
His head tilts, eyes close. His form fades, robes collapsing into emptiness. The swamp hum returns, louder now, as if exhaling with him.
Luke lowers his head, whispering to himself:
“Then balance… always balance. Even in code.”
The hut grows quiet. Outside, the swamp bubbles on, indifferent but eternal.
